According to the Dictionaries of the Scots Language:

To busy oneself with trifles, to accomplish little although appearing to be industrious

Hence jottlerjottling man, an odd job man on a farm, an orra man (Lth. 1825 Jam.; Uls. 1953 Traynor, jottler).

Similary, Ryan Porter wrote in "The Underrated “Jottle” Method I Use To Write Weekly With a 9–5":

It’s like doodling but for writing. Let’s call it a jottle.

Much like doodling captures an idea by quickly drawing something, a jottle is a quick and informal way of writing down ideas. Do it when you have 5–10 minutes of free time.

According to Google, several companies are selling a combination of a jar and a bottle under the moniker "jottle".

On this site, a jottle encompasses the meaning of the first two usages I've listed above. It's my own personal version of a "post", or a "tweet" or a "skeet" (as they call them on bluesky). So it's a short thought or post written by me in the margins of my day. Each jottle is most likely a trifle, not something terribly important, but maybe something i wanted to document for myself or for posterity. And since I've always held a personal bias towards the POSSE / Indieweb ideas, I'm hosting them here first and possibly syndicating elsewhere.

Honestly, they are mostly just for me, but I hope you might enjoy them too from time to time.

There's something I really like about publishing things on the internet on my own site, and for that simple reason, jottles exist on this site.
